Hello Pitch Wars hopefuls and welcome! This is my fourth year mentoring Pitch Wars and my second mentoring Young Adult. I’m so excited you stopped by!
My name is Cat Scully and I’m usually known for my world maps, which I’ve illustrated for Zoraida Cordova’s LABYRINTH LOST, Claire Legrand’s WINTERSPELL, and my current project is Karuna Riazi’s THE GAUNTLET. I’ve done about 15 world maps at this point for books and even for a movie (which is hush hush!) I’m represented by Miriam Kriss of Irene Goodman Literary and I write middle grade, young adult, and adult fantasy, science fiction, steampunk, horror, comedy, and a bit of WTF. You can find out more about me on the About Me page and see my world map illustrations over here.
My editing style focuses on big picture, beats, action, choreographing fight scenes (I used to fence and spar in college!), dialogue, comedic timing, atmosphere, scenery, and anything else that might come up. From there, I help with copy edits, consistencies, rules, establishing rules as well as teaching how and when to break them.
Don’t know why your book is getting rejections or how to fix it? NOT TO WORRY! That’s why we Pitch Wars mentors are here to help!
I’m also an extrovert that is big on being supportive and boosting morale whenever possible! If you need a pep talk, coffee, donuts, a very big bag of chocolate, I’m here for you as your personal cheerleader.
In my past years mentoring, I’ve been primarily known for my interest in horror on my wishlist. This year, I’m shaking things up with what I typically request. That said, I am absolutely looking for projects about and from diverse voices, not matter the genre you’re going for! Please send them my way!
Curious what I’m looking for? Here we go!
I’m looking for only YOUNG ADULT projects this year.
I’m pretty open to genre, so the suggestions below are just what I typically go for. If you’re not sure if I would like it and, say, have a story that is Romance plus Magical Realism, ABSOLUTELY send it to me! I love cross-genre projects!
What I typically take on isn’t by genre because I actually love a LOT of genres, including contemporary and romance! (I’m nuts about THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUITED by Becky Albertalli!)
The surprise this year is:
I am looking for contemporary fiction with or without romance! I’m also looking for genre fiction with romantic subplots! SURPRISE!
Maybe it’s the fact I binge-watched/read Outlander… and True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse novels… and fell in love with THE UPSIDE OF UNREQUIRED, WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI by Sandhya Menon, ELEANOR AND PARK by Rainbow Rowell, EVERYTHING LEADS TO YOU by Nina LaCour and the incredible work that is THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas. This year, I am absolutely adding contemporary, contemporary romance, and genre/spec fic with romantic elements!
I’m also looking for….
Give me your space captains, your time travelers, explorers, robots, science gone right, science gone wrong, physics, astronomy, aliens, after Earth generations, space colonies, androids, cyborgs, everything! I’m very passionate about getting more readers interested in science and engineering as well as wanting to see more diverse voices published in the genre. I love shows and movies like Stranger Things, Doctor Who, Star Wars, Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone, X-Files, Battlestar Galactica, Futurama, The Matrix, Alien, Blade Runner, Dark City, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the Fifth Element.
I’m looking for YA scifi like: THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE by Heidi Heilig, STARFLIGHT by Melissa Landers, CONSIDER by Kristy Acevedo, WANT by Cindy Pon, WE ARE THE ANTS by Shaun David Hutchinson, CINDER by Marissa Meyer
All fantasy, all sub-genres. I love high fantasy, magical realism, re-tellings, epic, grimdark, dark fantasy, folklore, legends, witches, mermaids, dragons, elemental magic, ANYTHING. I have a particular passion in editing for shaping magic rules and making sure they are consistent. The same goes for anything based on lore, fairy tales, the occult, and monsters. I love making sure that not only your characters are feeling real, but so are your fantastical elements. My favorite fantasy shows/movies are The Legend of Korra, AVATAR the last Airbender, Lord of the Rings, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, The Last Unicorn, Once Upon A Time, Stardust, HARRY POTTER
I’m looking for YA fantasy like: SHADOW AND BONE by Leigh Bardugo, ROAR by Cora Carmack, WINDWITCH by Susan Dennard, SALT AND STORM by Kendall Kulper, THE BONE WITCH by Rin Chupeco, A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas, any YA by Tamora Pierce or Kelly Armstrong, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
I love stories about teens in different eras and parts of the world, particularly if there is some romance to the story. I love editing books where we need to research dialogue, attire, manners, customs, culture, and history. I came to publishing from a love of stories about times I’d never lived in but related to, particularly the 20s, the 40s, the Victorians, Regency era, the Romantics, and even alternate history/steampunk! I’d love to see stories from all around the world, well researched, well written, diverse perspectives, and places and stories we haven’t seen before. In particular, I have a weakness for the 1920s.
I’m looking for YA historical like: THE DIVINERS by Libba Bray, DREAMLAND BURNING by Jennifer Latham, THE GENTLEMAN’s GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE by Mackenzi Lee, VENGEANCE ROAD by Erin Bowman, STEEPLEJACK by A. J. Hartley, IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS by Cat Winters
I look for horror and contemporary thriller and/or mystery every year, but because that’s primarily what I write and what I’m passionate about, I tend to be the most critical of these submissions. That said, if your horror or thriller needs help, you’ve come to the right person. I love Southern Gothic, occult detective, monsters, demons, demon hunters, dark witches and equally dark magic, anti-heroes, devils in the woods, ghosts, possessions, hauntings, old places, odd occurrences, and things that SHOULD NOT BE. I also LOVE horror comedy (HUGE Evil Dead and What We Do In the Shadows fan!) and have a weak spot for anything to do with Hannibal (the show, the books, anything)! My favorites shows/movies are: Evil Dead, Gravity Falls, What We Do In the Shadows, Insidious, The Conjuring, Hannibal (tv show), Penny Dreadful, Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow, American Horror Story, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hellboy, Preacher, and above all, Ash Vs. Evil Dead. I am absolutely in love with that show.
I’m looking for YA horror like: DAUGHTERS UNTO DEVILS by Amy Lukavics, THE LAST HARVEST by Kim Leggitt, DIARY OF A HAUNTING by M. Verano, WAKE THE HOLLOW by Gaby Triana, THE CREEPING by Alexandra Sirowy, SERVANTS OF THE STORM by Delilah Dawson, SHUTTER by Courtney Alameda, BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA by April Tucholke, THE SAVAGES by Matt Whyman
These are a starting place for what I’m looking for! I lean towards these genres, but I love a lot of genres. In doubt? Hit me up on twitter with questions! Bonus points if you love TWIN PEAKS and send me gifs!
That’s all for now! Make sure to hop around the other YA mentors blogs or stop by and say hi on Twitter or Instagram! I’d love to get to know you!
